Card explains the conventions of the genre that are used to present exposition without stalling the story. Eventually I was dismayed to only be left with the underwhelming and repeated promise of a wolf that I never really saw. We didn't think the emphasis on the snowman added anything to the story ("Enough with the snowman already!") And as the story progressed, those characters were barely mentioned. If you like pictures of women climbing a tree or laying on a blanket with or without a dildo in her mouth and no bonds at all, you might like this book. Instead we're introduced to a new group of characters that Melody is now meeting as she is immersed in regular classroom instruction. Although Laurel has never been wholly isolated from her peers, she relates to the experiences of being taught the same thing over and over again (in Laurel's case, it was shapes) and of spending large amounts of time in the special education room.
